Alumni Stories
The story of 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø comes from humble beginnings. In March 1870 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø was created “to afford authoritative instruction in art to the people of Leicester”. The first classes were held in a former warehouse where men and women from the gentry were taught during the day, while workers came to evening classes.
From those small beginnings, 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø is now home to 27,000 students, 3,200 staff, and over 200,000 alumni. Throughout 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø’s many incarnations – as the Leicester School of Art, Leicester Polytechnic, Leicester College of Art and Leicester College of Technology – we have never lost pride in being part of the vibrant city of Leicester. Whether you have been a student, a lecturer, worked in the factories which used to be on campus, or were even one of the untold number of music fans who saw gigs here down the decades, you are a part of our history.
